Born in Springfield (Feb 24, 1908) moved to Boston and attended Boston Latin School and studied at the Boston Museum School of Art, The Fogg Museum at Harvard and L’Ecole des Beaux Artes. He also studied law at Northeastern University.
Alan Davidson was an artist who worked in murals, watercolors and sculpture. He exhibited his works in New York galleries, the Berkshire Museum, the Worchester Museum, Amherst College and others. Davidson lived and worked in Rockport where he kept a studio at 8 Dean Road.
He was appointed a member of the Massachusetts Art Commission by Gov. John Volpe in 1961. During his tenure, Mr. Davidson was responsible for collecting and displaying all the portraits of former governors at the State House.
Davidson lectured in New England and wrote several articles on art and art appreciation. He designed play sets at the South Shore Playhouse in Cohasset, was an active member of the American Watercolor Society, the American Artists’ Professional League, the Allied Artists of America, the Salmagundi Club of New York, the Rockport Art Association and the North Shore Art Association. He died April 19, 1988.

Note: This painting is signed and titled verso, and a photocopy of the artist’s obituary from the Boston Globe is included. The title, written in the hand of the artist, reads “Stanley Simmons, Author.” We believe the sitter was the successful Broadway costume designer. Simmons was assistant to the costume designer for Six Characters in Search of an Author, possibly explaining the ‘author’ reference following the sitter’s name.
