Known primarily as an Ayrshire painter, Bonar-Lyon was born on 24th January 1873 in Glasgow. He initially studied art at the Glasgow School of Art, with further periods of study at the Royal College of Art in London and later in France and Belgium.
He taught at Irvine Royal Academy and at Ayr Academy and was affiliated with the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, The Glasgow Art Club and the Ayr Sketch Club.
Bonar Lyon held the view that the most important function of the artist was to give pleasure to the viewer. He was an admirer of the French Impressionists and his pictures show a clear affinity with their work. Source of biographical data: askART.com.
