Excellent condition, but not examined out of the original frame. Bears a gallery label, verso. The frame and double matts are likely fifty years old and should be replaced for improved presentation.

Born into a seafaring family in Hull, Roland departed from family tradition to become an artist, studying at the Hull School of Art.

At the outbreak of the Second World War he joined the Army and was taken prisoner in the retreat to Dunkirk. It was after moving to Shropshire in 1953 that he began to concentrate on watercolours, exhibiting at the Royal Academy, RI, RSW, and the Royal Scottish Academy.

He opened his own Gallery in Ludlow in 1974 and began to write and teach – both in England and France. Travelling widely, many of his works are of French villages or Italian harbours or boats.
