Excellent condition; original frame with mild wear. (Poor images; perfect painting!)

Anne Davidson Muir was a painter of flowers and portraits; studied Edinburgh College of Art and Heriot-Watt College Art School; her teachers included John Campbell Mitchell and James Riddel. She exhibited at the RA, RSA, RSW, SSA and elsewhere. Elected to Glasgow Society of Lady Artists in 1901, winning its Lauder Award in 1923, and Royal Society of Scottish Watercolors in 1916. Kelvingrove Art Gallery, Glasgow holds her worked. She lived in Edinburgh.

This painting represents a near perfect example of provenance. It shows a label for Aitken-Dott, Muir’s Art Agent, a label for the Scottish Society of Women Artists (where it was exhibited) completed in her hand, a label for Doig, Wilson, & Wheatley (most likely the buyer from the exhibition), and the name “Mrs. Nancy Dow” (commonly seen attached to auction items) who probably was the sole owner before consigning it for sale at Lyon & Turnbull Auctioneers, where it was purchased by the current owner c. 1971. A more complete history for a painting is unlikely – lacking only dates and sales receipts.

Auction results for similar paintings have generally ranged from £400 to £2000.
