This painting is signed “Nay”, probably a pseudonym for a professional artist. This type of painting was often sold via furniture stores or other retail outlets rather than through established galleries. Although showing skillful technique, these paintings were quick to produce and provided an extra stream of revenue for the artist. Thomas Kincade took the practice a step further, using a modern printing press to manufacture numerous copies which, with a few brush strokes, he could offer as “original art”, which it wasn’t in terms of the generally accepted definition of art.
Today artists employ the giclée print, an excellent rendition of his/her best work without claiming to be “original”. The modern giclée photographic print faithfully represents an original high quality painting for a small fraction of the cost of the original. The artist is now able to share good examples of his work at modest prices for those who are content with a copy of a print shared by hundreds or thousands of others.
My advice is always to buy what you like! This painting IS lovely and will look great on someone’s wall. It’s well worth the cost of a frame.
