Margaret Niven is best known for paintings of landscapes and flowers. She was born at Marlow in 1906, the daughter of the artist and engraver William Niven. She studied at the Winchester School of Art, at Heatherley’s and under Bernard Adams. She exhibited widely including at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. She was elected to the National Society of Painters, Sculptors and Gravers in 1932 and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1936. Her work is to be found in many collections including the Government Art Collection (especially British overseas embassies), Homerton College, Cambridge and Bradford City Art Gallery. Niven lived for many years at Wormley in Surrey.

Margaret Niven was elected a member of the ROI in 1936, on the recommendation of H. Davis Richter, and she remained a member, and sat on the council of the society, for over 60 years. She showed her work at the Royal Academy, the RBA, RP, Leicester Galleries and Wildenstein’s and she is represented in a number of English public collections.
