Excellent condition; protected in portfolio.
This painting was purchased from an American antique shop in New Jersey in 1998. The source wasn’t revealed but there was the suggestion the artist might have been American. I’m inclined to believe the origin is British. There is no question in my mind that the artist was a professional working between 1850 – 1950 – most likely near the turn of the 19th/20th centuries. Only a very talented artist would attempt a watercolor of this size!
Despite the absence of a signature and the expense of framing, this painting is worthy of hanging. It will require a large room, however!
Unattributed (American)
Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965), oil on board, 25″ x 19″ sight, unframed
Estimate: $300. Purchase for $200.
Very good condition but needs a good clean and varnish. White specks in the image are light reflections.
This portrait depicts the Prime Minister as a younger man, probably during the “Wilderness Years” – the period between the wars when he was on the “Back Benches” of Parliament (an MP not in the Cabinet). The artist is unknown, but was most likely American as the artist board has New York and San Francisco printed verso.

Very good condition. No damage or repair.
Unattributed (Probably British)
The Cavalier, oil on canvas board, 16.5″ x 13.5″ sight, 23.0″ x 20.0″ frame

Very good condition mounted in an attractive black and gold frame.
Purchased from a Montreal gallery as “English School”. The painting may be better described if the frame is removed. There does appear to be an inscription in the l/l corner that could be a signature. The painting appears to have been given a gloss varnish at the time of framing over twenty-one years ago when it was acquired as “English School”. In my opinion, it’s not an old painting, but as I’ve not examined it out of the frame I can’t possibly suggest an age. It’s possible that it’s an old, course canvas that was laid down to board following restoration. I’m skeptical that a professional would use gloss varnish, so it’s likely that it was cleaned and varnished at the time of re-framing.
British – 18th/19th Century
Elizabethan Period Cottage with figures, watercolor, unsigned, 6.5″ x 8.5″ sight, 13.25″ x 16.25″ frame
Estimate: $350. NFS.
Very good condition; purchased in Edinburgh c. 1971 and reframed. Has hung continuously since.
This painting was executed by an artist working contemporaneously with John Varley and Peter de Wint. An expert of that period might be able to attribute it more closely, but I’ve been happy to own a watercolor of this vintage and quality without regard for the identity of the artist.
American or British School – c. 1900
Children under umbrella, drawing with gray wash, 7″ x 5″ sight, 12.5″ x 10.5″ frame
Estimate: $100. NFS.
My first impression was the Morton Salt girl! This drawing is of the same age, as she was launched in an advertising campaign by Morton Salt in 1911. She was American but it’s uncertain where these two children lived. Of course there may be no connection but it’s fun to think there might have been. Was this an image the advertising agency N. W. Ayer & Company considered or did the artist of this drawing get his inspiration from the Morton campaign? We’ll never know!
